The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s premier junior golf circuit, descended upon the pristine greens of Selkirk Golf and Country Club in Selkirk, MB, on July 15-16. Nestled on the picturesque west bank of the historic Red River, this semi-private 18-hole gem set the stage for the second leg of four in the MJT PLYR Series across Canada. With over 60 players taking part from three provinces, it was a showcase of talent from budding golf stars across the region.

Participants were competing for titles in six divisions and the opportunity to be short-listed for the MJT Team Canada to the Jack Newton International Junior Classic in New South Wales, Australia, in October and the National Team Challenge in Fenwick, ON, this September.

A standout moment of the event was a thrilling hole-in-one on the par-three seventh hole, courtesy of 12-year-old Tomas Scarcello from Winnipeg, MB. Armed with a six iron, Tomas delivered the perfect shot. He went on to secure a respectable sixth place in the MJT Peewee Boys division. More highlights included shared Low Overall honours between Jackson Delaurier, 17, of Dauphin, MB, the MJT Junior Boys winner (76,73=149), and Hudson Hunnie, 15, of Winnipeg, MB, who won the MJT Juvenile Boys title (75,74=149). Following their respective wins, both Delaurier and Hunnie have been short-listed to represent MJT Team Canada in Australia.

Other leading performances were recorded by Ryder St. Laurent, 13, from Île Des Chênes, MB, in MJT Bantam Boys (155), Ty Montour, 11, of Oakville, MB, in MJT Peewee Boys (165), Skylar Whitford, 15, from St. Andrews, MB, in MJT Girls 15-19 (203), Camryn Thomas, 14, from Winnipeg, MB, in MJT Girls U15 (202).

Skylar Whitford, 15, from St Andrews, MB, came to play in the MJT Girls 15-19 division, showing everyone that a little preparation goes a long way. “I prepared by going out to golf with friends and family who challenged me,” she said, adding, “I also mentally prepared by giving myself motivation and talking positive. It brings me confidence in my game knowing I can play in new environments and under pressure.”
